The Parish Council has been given permission to fill the current vacancies for Newtown and Edstaston Wards by co-option.
Any persons willing to fill these vacancies should apply to the Clerk in writing on or before the 31st March 2023.
To be considered you must be 18 years of age or over at the date of his or her nomination, and a Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or a citizen of another Member State of the European Community and either:
- on that day he/she is and therefore he/she continues to be a local government elector for the area of the parish; or
- he/she during the whole of the twelve months preceding that day occupied as owner or tenant land or other premises in the parish;
- his/her principal or only place of work during that twelve months has been in that area; or
- during the whole of those twelve months resided either in the parish or within 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) of it.
Candidates must disclose this information in their letter of application and are advised to complete as many of the relevant qualifications as apply.
There are certain disqualifications from holding office, of which the main (see Section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972) are:
- holding a paid office under the authority;
- bankruptcy;
- having been sentenced to a term of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) of not less than three months, without the option of a fine during the five years preceding the appointment; and
- being disqualified under any enactment relating to corrupt or illegal practices.
Public elections for these positions cannot be held until the year 2025 but for the interim period co-option to the Parish Council will be voted on by the current members of the Council.
