On Sunday 22nd October, Edstaston Village Hall was filled with warm smiles and heartfelt appreciation as 40 parish councillors, ex-councillors, friends, and family gathered to celebrate Dr. Len Staines’ remarkable 30 years of service to Wem Rural Parish Council. The newly refurbished hall provided the perfect backdrop for the event, organised in honour of Len’s dedication to the community he has so faithfully served.

Len Staines, or as many affectionately call him, “Len the Legend,” has been a fixture in parish life since he first joined the council in May 1991. In the words of the Chair’s opening speech, his journey has been like one of his favourite songs, “Wild Side of Life,”—full of energy and commitment. From addressing local concerns to championing environmental causes, Len’s contributions have touched many lives across Barkers Green, Aston, and Tilley and beyond.

Reflecting on Len’s enduring legacy, the Chair remarked, “Len’s service has touched the lives of many. Whether addressing concerns about highways, helping with planning matters, or simply lending a hand, he has always been there to lead us.” A notable part of the afternoon’s speeches was the recognition of Len’s contributions to balancing the growth of the parish while protecting its natural beauty. His passion for wildlife and his involvement in local conservation efforts, particularly through the Wem Area Climate Action (WACA) group, were highlighted as some of his proudest achievements.

Throughout the afternoon, Len’s family received special mention. His family have been his “Perfect Remedy,” supporting him during his long career of public service. As the Chair noted, “His family have stood by him throughout his service, always a source of strength, helping him stay grounded through the ups and downs of public life.”

In addition to recognising Len’s past achievements, the speeches looked forward to the future. Len’s unwavering commitment to addressing climate change and ensuring a sustainable environment was celebrated, with the Chair reflecting, “As we look ahead, we can be sure that Len will remain committed to serving the people around him.” His passion for both community and countryside will no doubt continue to shape the parish for years to come.

To close the celebration, Len was presented with two meaningful gifts: a special bottle of whisky and a glass model of a Garden Tiger Moth, crafted by local artisans, to honour his love for moths and conservation. The Chair’s parting words captured the sentiment of the entire gathering: “Here’s to Len, to 30 years of exemplary public service, and to the many years ahead as he continues to ‘Rock On’.”

The afternoon was a fitting tribute to a man whose service has not only helped shape the parish but has also ensured that its rural charm and natural beauty remain intact for future generations.
