Wem and Prees Medical Practice are preparing to honour those who have served and sacrificed through a beautiful display of poppies and they are asking you to contribute by donating knitted, crocheted, or sewn red poppies to add to their collection.
Your handmade poppies will play a vital role in their display, serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many. Whether you’re an experienced crafter or trying your hand at it for the first time, every contribution matters.
In addition, Wem Rural Parish Council has purchased a wreath from the British Legion, which will be laid during the Remembrance Service, reinforcing our community’s commitment to honouring the memory of those who have served.
How to Make a Knitted Poppy
If you’re looking for a way to get involved, here’s a simple pattern for making your own knitted poppy:
Knitted Poppy Pattern: Please use old size 8 needles or new 4mm needles.
- Cast on 120 stitches.
- Row 1 – 4: Knit.
- Row 5: Knit 3 stitches together across the row (40 stitches).
- Row 6 – 9: Knit.
- Row 10: Knit 2 stitches together across the row (20 stitches).
- Row 11 – 14: Knit.
- Row 15: Knit 2 stitches together across the row (10 stitches).
- Finish: Cut yarn, leaving a tail approximately 6 inches long. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches to close the poppy.
The Importance of the Poppy
The red poppy has become a powerful symbol of remembrance since World War I, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields.” It serves as a reminder of the resilience and sacrifices made by those who have served in conflict. By donating your handmade poppies, you are contributing to a meaningful display that honours their memory.
We appreciate any poppies you can donate, and we look forward to showcasing our community’s efforts in remembrance. Thank you for helping Wem & Press Medical Centre create a beautiful tribute this Remembrance Day!
